Tips for Success

       Come to class everyday.

Come with a good attitude: your child wants to learn and is willing to try.

Come prepared: your child has reviewed the night before, completed homework and is prepared to participate. He/she has materials for class.

Advocate for himself/herself: ask for help before its too late.

-Remember that this is a full-year class and carries a grade which will appear on your report card with all of your other grades. Your grade will be based on your class participation, homework grade, and test grades.

-You will take the NY State Spanish proficiency exam at the end of 8th grade. If you pass, you will receive 1 unit of high school credit...if you fail the exam (even if you have passed the course) you will need to start Spanish/French over again in high school.

-Spanish and French start out very easy...you will learn the alphabet, colors, etc. There may be some things that you already learned last year. But don't be fooled--it gets harder VERY quickly and you will need to keep up with the new vocabulary right from the start so that you do not fall behind.

-Study the words on your vocabulary lists a little at a time. Try having a friend or family member practice the words with you (say them out loud)… also try to write out the words by covering up the Spanish/French side of your vocabulary list in your textbook.

-Complete all homework and projects ON TIME and carefully. Homework is meant to help you put into practice what we have learned in class, and will reinforce those new ideas. Homework is also a large part of your grade. Workbook pages must be complete and on time--valueable points will be deducted if your assignment is handed in late. (see AQJH late work policy)

-Be sure to find out the assignments when you are absent and be sure to turn in all work that you missed while absent. YOU are responsible for seeing Mrs. Duttinger for your missed work.

-If you feel that you are falling behind or would simply like some extra help--talk to me and set up a time when we can meet. Don't wait until things have gotten really bad!

-Participate as much as possible in class! It makes class much more fun, helps your participation grade, and will keep you learning all through class. Don't worry about making mistakes when you speak--it happens to all of us even Mrs. Duttinger!

Do your best and have fun! :-)
