Athletics

As an alumnus of Aquinas, I take immense pride in our institution's enduring commitment to academic and athletic excellence. Throughout its storied history, Aquinas has maintained a steadfast belief in the importance of a comprehensive athletic program as a vital component of our educational mission.

Our athletics program at Aquinas is dedicated to creating a safe, enjoyable, and supportive environment where our student-athletes can cultivate valuable traits such as character, integrity, loyalty, teamwork, and sportsmanship. We are proud to note that a significant number of our students actively participate in athletics and extracurricular activities.

Our coaches, who are among the finest in their fields, not only impart athletic skills but also instill values that promote lifelong fitness and a commitment to a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. We strive to ensure that our athletics program reflects our school motto, "Teach me goodness, discipline, and knowledge."

To our current student-athletes and those considering joining our athletics programs, you'll find not just a team, but a family that supports you both on and off the field. You will forge enduring friendships and develop a profound dedication to Aquinas, embodying the spirit of our alma mater, "Aquinas Evermore." Above all, remember the words, "I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me."

Go Irish!

Sincerely,

The coaching philosophy of girls tennis is to develop players’ skills and instill a life-long love of the game. Among its accolades the team consistently qualifies for team sectionals, sends players to the Individual Sectional tournament each year, is a Scholar Athlete team, and has reached the semi-finals two consecutive seasons.

Players of all ability levels are welcome. Players need to provide their own tennis racquet and tennis shoes.

The mission of the Aquinas Boxing Program is to provide a positive influence in the physical and emotional development of each student participating in the program, in a way that is safe, fun and encourages academic achievement.

The Aquinas Mission Bouts is not to be confused with professional boxing. Instead, we at Aquinas follow the rules of amateur boxing and apply additional rules to make the program safer. Participants are provided with headgear, gloves, hand wraps, custom fit mouthpieces, and foul protectors. Controlled spars, and matching boxers based on skill level, style, and weight, are other ways in which Aquinas protects its boxers.

The season stresses training and conditioning, which is essential to the sport of boxing. Our training will provide the students with a means to gain strength, flexibility, and endurance. Boxing at Aquinas is used to educate the student and help them prepare for future years by building their self-confidence, teaching them to control their emotions inside and outside of the ring, and how hard work pays off.

The Aquinas Golf Program invites male and female students in grades 7-12 to try out for the JV and varsity teams. Students trying out for golf should have some experience playing on a 9 or 18-hole course however, the main requirement is that students are willing to work hard to improve their game.

Aquinas plays in the Independent League along with Bishop Kearney, Finney, Lima Christian, and Wellsville, and normally plays McQuaid twice during the season. The teams practice at Aquinas' home course - Caledonia Country Club. Some home matches are played at Brook Lea Country Club and Ridgemont Country Club. Aquinas won the league championship in 2007 (inaugural year), 2008, and 2011.

Golfers must supply their own clubs and equipment. Varsity golfers will receive an AQ golf bag to use for the season.

The Boys Lacrosse Program is becoming more competitive every year and starting to become one of Aquinas' more recognized sports. Our program encourages players to play - regardless of ability. With the focus placed on the growth of players both on and off the field, our coaches work to build relationships with the players in order to be able to assist them in lacrosse and life. The players benefit from having coaches that are dedicated to bettering themselves and their own lacrosse knowledge.

The Aquinas Lacrosse teams work extremely hard and the foundation that is being set is based on cohesion, commitment, discipline, and enthusiasm. Our coaching staff is dedicated to creating a positive and winning culture that also promotes the principles of Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge. It is very important to our coaches that the lacrosse players leave Aquinas prepared for college and beyond.

Girls Lacrosse is excellent for both the beginner and the advanced player. Our program balances the experience of skilled players with the enthusiasm of our energetic beginners to field teams with a desire to win and represent Aquinas well.

Students enjoy the benefits of belonging to a team as experienced coaches ensure each athlete finds a way to contribute. Members of the Girls Lacrosse team find their experiences rewarding, leading some to continue to play at the college level and a few on scholarship. Our players are proud to represent Aquinas in Section V and always look forward to a winning season.

The Aquinas Institute Girl’s Softball Program has always been one of the most exciting and competitive programs in the Monroe County area, winning Sectional Championships in 2002, 2008, 2011 and 2015. The team won the New York State High School Class A Championship in 2008 as well. Over the years, many players have received First Team recognition for Monroe County’s Private Parochial Schools while individual players have been selected as: Class A NYS Players of the year, Section V and All-Greater Rochester Players of the Year, and selected to the All-Greater Rochester Softball Team.

This Program strives to be the best that it can be by improving individual efforts, which in turn, improves the total TEAM effort. In order to have a total team effort, players must understand the philosophy that no one player is greater than the team itself. Each player must be committed to the team, have a positive attitude toward coaches and teammates, be self-motivated and disciplined, challenge themselves to always do better by maximizing their effort, and most importantly, believe that they have what it takes to be a winner.

Of course, as a team our goal is to win games and if we use the philosophy stated above and put forth our very best effort, a win should be expected. But as a team, if our very best effort does not result in a win, we can take pride in the fact that we did our very best.
